It is extraordinary news that, under the auspices of US President Donald Trump and with the support of Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar, the Israeli government and Hamas have agreed to sign the first phase of a historic peace agreement.
This event occurs two years after the massacre perpetrated on October 7, 2023, by the terrorist sect Hamas, a Palestinian political and paramilitary organization established in 1987.
On that fateful date, militants from the evil subversive group entered Israeli territory from the 365-square-kilometer Gaza Strip using motorcycles and pickup trucks. They killed 1,219 young people and kidnapped 254 who were participating in an open-air music festival.
It was a barbaric, cowardly, and despicable act, typical of psychopaths who make hatred their reason for existence. Those attending the event enjoyed themselves, singing and dancing, some in the company of family members.
In the early morning, they heard explosions and thought they were the sound of rockets and fireworks that accompany the festivities.
They were wrong.
It was the sound of death that preceded the explosion of 2,500 projectiles launched against Jewish villages on the outskirts, a frenzied act of war complemented by the entry of terrorist commandos who riddled the audience with bullets. Those who took refuge in the hallways were killed with bullets and live grenades.
Those fleeing were shot down with shrapnel fire and others had their throats cut.
Many women were kidnapped, raped and murdered.
Kibbutzim, rural communities near the border, were devastated and their inhabitants killed, including elderly people who were carrying out the altruistic task of providing medical and food aid to Gazette children.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Piero Perolin, spokesman for His Holiness Leo XIV, described the bloody episode as an "unworthy and inhumane massacre," adding that "even legitimate defense must respect the principle of proportionality and that the resulting war has had inhumane consequences," referring to the military attacks ordered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that left 65,000 dead.
Now, however, there is hope for an end to this tragedy of global impact.
Through a dialogue table, the warring parties have agreed to the release of hostages and prisoners, a ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the reconstruction of the destroyed area.
The stage of the
negotiations will be in the city of Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.
A valuable precedent projecting American diplomatic power was the Abraham Accords, signed in Washington, DC, on September 15, 2020, under the presidency of Donald Trump. These agreements normalized diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco.
The pending tasks for US diplomacy and the European democracies are to free Venezuela from the Chavista satrap, Nicolás Maduro, responsible for numerous murders, imprisonments, torture, and the exodus of 8 million of his compatriots, as well as to neutralize the Russian genocidal Vladimir Putin, who for three and a half years has been bombing Ukrainian residential buildings, hospitals, and schools, but who has been unable to subdue the patriotic spirit of that people, led by the admirable democratic leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
