Canada is the country with the most straightforward conduct in the world. Its inhabitants are the best educated in our hemisphere, yet they don't rub this beautiful quality in the face of the rest of the world's indifference. They love and protect the environment without burdening anyone with excessive regulations. On the contrary, every Canadian practices conduct that, as Pope Francis would say, understands that man is part of nature and therefore knows how to protect it. They have the longest coastline in the world and do not use these geographical conditions to penetrate other nations or conquer economies. They are multilingual and peace-loving. It was a country made up of several British colonies and a French colony that preferred to preserve a bridge with Europe by maintaining its status as a British Dominion whose head of state is the monarch of the United Kingdom. It is one of the few nations in the world that can boast of having eradicated poverty. It is one of the few countries that has never had a disagreement with its southern neighbor, the United States.
Perhaps these characteristics led Donald Trump to believe that absorbing Canada would be quick and easy. However, he has found that the mouse knows how to roar, and that its roar is loud and appealing to both insiders and outsiders.
Thanks to the stance taken by the President of the United States, Canadians have realized that the world built on the rubble of World War II has collapsed and that they must begin the difficult path of restructuring their economy and choosing new allies in the ongoing restructuring of the global economy.
The exercise will be difficult because some of the advantages of being middle class will have to be postponed to lay and strengthen the foundations for a new global economic adjustment. The process has already begun imperceptibly, like any Canadian process. Donald Trump's ideological allies, whose lead in the polls was evident, succumbed to the power of a prime minister who has plenty of credentials to rebuild an economy, as well as wit and good humor. Canadian citizens who usually enjoy their summer vacations in the United States have canceled their reservations to travel to Europe for shorter periods. Companies that manufacture auto parts are already preparing to assemble Chinese cars. Canadian consumers have decided not to buy products from the United States. Furthermore, it is said that in the halls of power, there is already talk of a Canada integrated into Europe and with economic complementarities with China, a country with a middle class of 6 billion inhabitants.
In the process, our hemisphere has seen the weakening of the most successful economic union in its history, formed by the United States, Canada, and Mexico many moons ago. Thanks to this, the three countries strengthened their middle classes, the fuel of development. And while the fate that U.S. policy has forced upon Canada will strengthen it, it will be very difficult to establish a new engine for growth in our hemisphere when Canada flies in European or Chinese airs. This roar will cost us dearly.
