Institutional Statement by The Interamerican Institute For Democracy on the crisis in Venezuela.

The Interamerican Institute for Democracy, true to its mission in supporting the ideas and the just causes that contribute to the strengthening of democratic processes and institutions in Latin America, in face of the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, declares its full support to the National Assembly, the only democratic branch of National Power in Venezuela , in their struggle to restore legality, respect for the Constitution and the rule of law in their country.

We declare that, it is essential to avoid violence and to engage in a serious dialogue between the government and the opposition, provided that:

  • First, all political prisoners wrongfully held in captivity, be released.

  • Second, That the Presidential Recall Referendum legitimated by  the Constitution , be ordained without    delay or unsubstantial subterfuges , or alternately set a date  within the  year 2016 for the implementation of a constitutional formula that allows the people to express themselves freely and to elect a President for the Republic.

  • Third, to respect the spirit of the Democratic Charter of the OAS, signed in Lima in 2001 by the countries of the Americas, during the presidency of Hugo Chavez Frias.

Venezuela must return to the path of constitutionality and legality before it is too late.
