DECLARATION OF REPUDIATION OF THE NEW DICTATORIAL ACTION IN VENEZUELA
The INTERAMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR DEMOCRACY, in compliance with its principles and objectives of defending freedom, democracy, human rights and institutionalism in the Americas, states:
1.- That a coup d’état has been consummated in Venezuela with the purpose of keeping the regime of Nicolas Maduro in power above the popular will, constitutional legality and international order. The regime has used the Supreme Court of Venezuela to silence and supplant the National Assembly, the only democratic organization with legitimacy in that country.
2.- We express our public repudiation to the new dictatorial action of Nicolas Maduro and his government, denouncing that Venezuela is following the path of the consolidation of a tyranny within the Cuban-Castro model.
3.- We urge the democratic governments of the Americas and the world to make a categorical statement on this new violation, to immediately vote for the pertinent sanctions in the framework of the Inter-American Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OEA), and to follow the exemplary conduct of the government of Peru, who has withdrawn its Ambassador from Venezuela and expressed its decision not to maintain any relation with the dictatorship that oppresses the Venezuelan people.
